Q WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER OF YOUR EARLY YEARS AT MOTHERWELL.
BS I remember Motherwell being a heavy track plenty of loose dirt which made turning
the bike harder the standard of local riders was much higher than I expected. The
highlight of my time at Motherwell was riding for Scotland v England in 1954
Q WHAT CHANGES TO BIKES OCCURED DURING YOUR CAREER
BS My first bike in 1948 was a peashooter Harley Davidson. My next one was a 1931
JAP I rode JAP all my career until1968 when I bought a new 2 valve JAWA
Q WHAT TEAMS DID YOU RIDE FOR IN YOUR CAREER AND WERE YOU ALWAYS
BASED IN LANARKSHIRE
BS MOTHERWELL in 1951 1952 1953 1954 Southhampton and Ipswich in 1955
Long Eaton in 1963 Middlesborough in1964 and Glasgow in 1965 1966 I lived in
Bellshill except 1955 when I lived in Southampton and Ipswich
Q WERE YOU DISSAPPOINTED NOT TO BE A TIGER IN 1964 EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE
TO GET ABOUT 10 OPEN MEETINGS DURING THE SEASON
BS I did not know I was to be a tiger in1964 Reg Fearman transferred me to
Middlesborough from Long Eaton
Q WAS A SWAP SET UP TO MAKE YOU A TIGER IN 1965
BS I think Ray Cresp was originally to go to the Tigers that year as I was living at
Bellshill I was transferred to Glasgow Ray Cresp went to Halifax
Q YOUR TEAM-RIDING WITH NILS PAULSEN AND ALSO WITH GEORGE HUNTER WHEN
RIDING FOR SCOTLAND IS STILL REMEMBERED AS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF A
NEARLY EXTINCT ART WHAT WAS YOUR SECRET, DID YOU LIKE TO RIDE ON THE
INSIDE OR WHAT
BS George Hunter I had a good understanding when we road together I always took the
outside. it seemed to work my team partner at Motherwell Derek Close was another I
was quite comfortable with
Q ANY TALES OF YOUR TIME PROMOTING IN OZ WHAT TRACK WAS IT AND WHAT
RIDERS RODE THERE
BS It was when I lay in hospital with 2 fractured vertebra in 1967 that Bob Sharp
Gordon Guasco asked me to join them promoting in Rockampton 400 miles north of
Brisbane other riders included Kev Torpie Bryan Elliot
Q YOU WERE TRACK MANAGER AT BLANTYRE WHAT STORIES DO YOU HAVE TO TELL
ABOUT IT
BS Track manager was a fancy name for the job I did. I repaired the fence filled in
holes on the track surface covered the dog track with plastic etc Jimmy Beaton was
the organiser
Q DID YOU PLAN TO RIDE FOR GLASGOW AGAIN AFTER GOING TO OZ- IN THE
WINTER OF 1966 WE CERTAINLY COULD HAVE DONE WITH YOU DURING 1968.
BS My plan was to return to Glasgow in 1967 but when I injured my back I could not
see myself being competitive in u k

BS I do not see any of my Glasgow team mates Charlie Monk is the only one that
comes to mind he is 1.500 miles away in Adelaide
Q HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR YOUR FIRST SPEEDWAY BIKE
BS My first bike was Harley Davidson bought from Jack Young’s older brother for 30
pounds in 1948

BS They were all good the Motherwell consortium for persevering with me when I was
a liability Reg Fearman for giving me a chance after 7 years absence Ian Hoskins for
bringing me back to Scotland

BS Not many riders liked White City with its long straights and sharp turns it was a
good home track I liked it
Q DO YOU REMEMBER ANY OF THE FANS FROM YOUR TIME WITH THE TIGERS
BS I do remember the fans at White City they were very vocal but names escape me
after 44 YEARS
