It happened at Blantyre One, Paul, 1979 I think Flatman put young Jim into the fence after the heat had finished and Jimmy Snr took excpetion to this and went after Flatman with either a rake or a shovel, cant quite remember which, but I think it was rake . Both riders were no shrinking violets when it came to the rough stuff on track, but neither was auld Jimmy off it ;D I actually think his promoters licence was suspended for even longer than six months. Neil McFarlane came from Workington to act as team manager in 1980, so maybe this was to take a bit of pressure off DLT, who was perhaps sole promoter that year I know people frown on this kind of behaviour at the speedway, but as a kid I loved it ;D ....Personally, I have never seen any photos of the incident, GC. I think it is just another of these tales that will remain in foklore and people minds

Old Jimmy loved a scrap though . I remember being at Hampden as a wean and Jimmy was having a go at the Templetons and the McMillans , and they were all on the same side . Every time young Jim or Bobby were involved in an incident on track - all eyes would look towards the pits waiting for the auld yin to emerge . But in fairness to Jimmy Beaton , we probably wouldn't have a team to support now had it not been for him .

Dont worry, mate, I am not that far behind ye ........although if you were to ask me about something that happened in last dozen or so years, then I would struggle, but the 70s and 80s and I am fine You are correct about Jimmy on both counts. The man is a legend and what he has done for Glasgow Tigers should never be underestimated, nor forgotten ;D As for his off-track shenanigans, in his book - More Confessions Of A Speedway Promoter - John Berry has a wee paragraph or two on all the tracks he visited with his Ipswich Witches in the early 70s and in the Glasgow piece he comments about how there was always an underlying feeling that something was about to kick off at any moment whenever the Witches were in town and he was keen to get in and get out ASAP, all thanks to the demenour of the local promoter ;D

I think it was 1980 that he was banned. Did something not happen with Jimmy and Robbie McGregor's father that year? Or was it because McGregor was under age when he rode for us?!!

Dont know, DJW. I do seem to remember wee Robbie and his father living in a caravan beside the stadium, maybe wee Frank Doonin and Jimmy were after some rent ;D Robbie McGregor chose to head to Boston for the 1981 season and there was a wrangle between the Tigers and Barracudas. Glasgow must have wanted money claiming that they owned his contract, but Boston counteracted that claiming that the contract was invalid because he signed it when he was underage and the Barracudas won. So maybe there was something going on in the background between Jimmy and the McGregors which prompted his decision to move on to caravans new.

MJFC and others
You will be pleased to know that Blantyre 1 will feature prominently in Peter Colvin's "Snapshots of Yesteryear" programme column over the next few weeks.

Very sad news, he must only have been in his early 40s Thanks to his wholehearted efforts he became very popular with the fans durng his sole 1986 season at Craighead Park, he was just one of those types of riders that the crowd takes an instant shine to. I think he arrived in Scotland with only the clothes he was standing in and probably left the same and I dont think any of us will forget those orange leathers RIP Kelvin

That will give me something to look forward to, Graham ;D I always enjoy seeing old snaps from the Blantyre tracks, the first one in particular as they are quite rare. So hopefully it will be ones I havent seen before.

Remember the weekly crashfest which was the Blantyre Trot? Usually on straight after heat 13 IIRC you seldom seemed to get four guys finishing it without mishap. Cool name for a race though.
Also remember that the helmet colours on the racecard for the match were abbreviated to "R", "B", "W" and "Y./B." but typed out in full for the second half. It's the sort of thing kids notice and I thought it was really weird.

The scariest second half race ever seen must have been in the 70s at Coatbridge when a few likely Aussies came to the Tigers looking for a team place. I should be able to recall all of the names but age and diminishing powers of recall have seriously dulled the old senses. Grasscutter will definitely know. From memory ------ Mick McCoy, Stephen Barr (unsure), Gary Williams and maybe one other. Their initial race together was, lets just say, a bit harem scarem.
