I don't know what they were doing at the WTC yesterday in Poland but the riders for the next race appeared to be coming out as soon as the previous one was finished. Now I know that for various reasons that might not be possible every race (eg riders getting 2 on the trot) but nevertheless it would seem that it is possibke even in a big meeting like that with various egos in the pits that they can be geared to being ready to go quickly. The "10 minutes before the start" parade to me is a definite way forward and the shorter period between races is something to aim for. SKY meetings in general and the 25 heat SWC in particular are very much like this, herbie, TV time constraints mean they get the riders out for the next heat as soon as possible. On Monday nights they do it in four heat cycles, then get the adverts in. Although I dont see why a similar sort of thing cant be done even if TV cameras are not in evidence Any rider not in the previous heat should be ready to go in the next, no matter what. Meetings at Ashfield have tended to be long drawn out affairs for a number of years now and quite often for no apparent reason,

Well, on the basis that the televised match at Somerset will be over in about 90 minutes with Sky being there, can somebody that's going keep a watch on what they do to get the riders out quickly, and we can then do that at Ashfield?

I was just suggesting that if the forthcoming meeting at Somerset can get run in about one hour 30 for 15 heats cos it's Sky then we want to have a look at how they do it and then copy it if we're saying that at the moment we can't do a meeting in under 2 hrs-worth a look.

If the promotion don't realise that they have a problem with the way they are currently presenting the meetings nothing will change. At least this has been brought to their notice, it's up to them now, there's nothing more to be said.

Completely agree with the need to start promptly and run the meetings far more quickly. Sunny afternoons never seem to have any sense of urgency and just meander along. Don't think we need an interval/ large break mid meeting either. Funny how our evening meetings get run at a far quicker lick!!
The delays at the starting gate add bit to the overall running time but the main cause is that no one seems to hurry the riders along in the pits any more. Tom McCrone was a past master at this!
Are lengthy meetings a British phenomena? The WTC in Poland was run in jig time while last nights meeting at Kings Lynn probably needed at late licence - anybody remember them?? - the Supporters Club dances in days of yore rarely managed to secure one

Starting the meeting after the appointed time doesn't make sense. It's self-defeating.
If the curfew at Ashfield is 6.30 pm, a late start means there's even less time to run the meeting. It also limits the opportunities for junior racers.
Delays due to injuries, fence re-builds and rain interventions are inevitable. Speedway fans recognise such circumstances and are renowned for their patience.
The referee has ultimate responsibility for the smooth-running of a meeting. Old-timers in the 80s will recall Frank Ebdon, a referee whose name could chill the blood of rider, promoter and supporter. Frank rattled through every meeting as though he was running late for his tea. We'd barely time to fill in our programmes. Yes, his no-nonsense methods upset people, but I'll bet track staff and officials upped their game when Mr E was in town.
Tapes up at 4 pm. As a message of intent, it couldn't be clearer.

I seem to remember last season the parade being 3.45, a couple of times we had to wait a few minutes until 4.00 to get the 1st race out, fell by the wayside though. That's the way forward for me.
