Having donned my anorak and blown dust off some red-and-white memories, I would like to take issue with a comment in the current press release.
It relates to Tigers' forthcoming Sky outing at Somerset, a match which will restore the nation's faith in domestic speedway. According to the communiqué from Ashfield, this will be the Stripes' "first ever league match on the TV".
Not so. Highlights of Glasgow v. Poole (British League) on May 5, 1972, at Hampden Park were broadcast as a side feature on the following day's Scotsport Cup Final Special. Rain spoilt the match, resulting in a 51-27 procession for the Tigers.
I'm sure the press release is intended to refer to the Sky era and live coverage, but it should have been worded accordingly.

Maybe they meant that it would be the first live broadcast.
Tigers very first BL meeting against Hackney in 1965 and a Tigers v Edinburgh 1966 meeting were recorded and broadcast the following afternoon.
The Tigers v Poole meeting in the Hampden era wasn't a great advert for the sport. I was Alec Cameron's assistant that night. He had to preview each race. I told him that John Langfield was a right dirty so and so but he may not want to say that! When I suggested "colourful and controversial" instead, he was so taken with that description that he wrote it down and used it for the rest of the evening! Seem to remember i got two guineas (£2 - 2-0) as my fee - happy days

How many matches did stv record at Shawfield I recall Peter Collins doing a recording at Shawfield possibly during the Scottish Monarchs occupation.

I think you are referring to the Tigers v Newport match on fair Friday 18th July 1997. The match was recorded and shown on the the Sky Scottish channel, which only had a brief existence. I was in the pits and the tv boys hooked me up with a headset and mic. This was linked to the producer and I had to let him know of any changes. As well as Peter Collins, Dave Lanning was up that night and did the actual commentary.

Yep, the Monarchs vesus Hackney meeting was recorded. Doug Templeton fell in font of a Hackney rider - possibly Malcolm Brown - and ended up with broken ribs. There was a feeling that this crash was staged for the cameras, but don't know if it is true. As Arthur wouls say "Sensation!!"
Another TV crash was at Wolves where some action was being shot to incorporate into the story line for Crossroads - remember this program? - and Pete Jarmans fall saw him missing a number of Wolves meetings due to his wrist injury

Having slagged my mum and sister for years about watching p1sh like that I was forced to eat humble pie and sit down and watch the show. I remember that Speedy Pete broke something (I thought it was his leg). I do not recall who else was involved but James (Jimmy) Bond was allegedly 'shaken but not stirred' by the incident

STV recorded Berwick in 1988 and Edinburgh(SC or some other trophy) in 1992. I wonder if any recordings still exist of the matches in the 60/70s?
