Remember our first BL season and our amazing start which saw us topping the first league table issued in early May. While it was downhill from there it was quite a roller coaster ride as we eventually finished 13 th out of 18. Injuries were part of the sport and very few teams escaped unscathed. we certainly didnt but Maury Mattingley missed a number of meetings but not from injury.
Flight problems and time off for his business led to him missing about half a dozen meetings and in four of them we suffered narrow defeats. - the 41-37 home defeats by Wimbledon and Sheffield (flight problems). Trevor Redmond allowed him to miss Oxford at home and Long Eaton away in order to catch up with his work backlog - probably wrongly in hindsight. Oxford won 40-38 in an incident filled meeting and Long Eaton's 41-37 was one of their few wins that summer.
With Maury in the team we surely would have won all four and the eight league points would have taken us up to fifth place which would have been our highest placing ever in the top league and perhaps it would have been a fairer reflection of that fine team. Maury Mattingley Willie Templeton, Bluey Scott, Nils Paulsen, Charlie Monk, Graham Coombes, Bruce Ovenden.
Happy days

Aaaah. Those days are past now and in the past they must remain. I have been going through my programme collection and can still remember the Oxford Cheaters and the sight of Arne Pander leaning on a rope in the pits and stirring his mates up. As you say, halcyon days at the old White City.

Snap. Hated that wee weasel Pander after that. Now it is Eastbourne top of the unlikable list. Think their fans have been like that for years.
