While it was disappointing that Doyle, Lambert and Tungate were all missing yesterday, it sadly is about par for the course when it comes to internationals in Scotland. The two at Hampden that have been mentioned recently were GB v Poland in 1971 and v Sweden in 1970. For the Polish meeting Ronnie Moore and Trevor Hedge were no shows, apparently they didn't get a booking, while Briggo only turned up halfway through the Swedish encounter. It's debatable whether Fundin showed at all at Hampden that night, two very uninspiring lasts were his lot that night. Scotland v England tests at the White City were blighted by under strength English teams. In 1964 Colin Pratt was drafted in despite his Hackney side having a home meeting that night and their defeat that night didn't help their title bid. The 65 international was nearly cancelled due to a lack of English riders being prepared to travel with only the last minute agreement of Hunter and Simmonds saving the day. The following year had Broadbanks pulling out after sustaining an eye injury in his first race and partner Mattingley being unable to ride until the later heats as Jonny Faafeng hadn't arrived with his bike. His watch had stopped! The 67 GB v Sweden meeting is remembered to this day for Mountford skittling partner Monk and putting him out the meeting. So yesterday was in good company.
