Coombes sent me an email enquiring about matches missed by Steve during his Tigers career. I thought it was worth displaying my findings here.
What is most impressive is he only missed two home meetings from 1978-1992; the final meeting at Blantyre Stadium against The Buccaneers on 18th October 1981 (on holiday) and the opening National League match against Middlesbrough at Craighead Park on 8th April 1983 (illness).
He missed the following away fixtures:
15/04/1979 at Workington (Anglo-Scottish Cup L1)
Reason unknown.
R/R used.
19/07/1979 at Middlesbrough (NL)
Blew engine in warm-up and did not ride.
Reserve & tactical replacements used.
21/10/1979 at Berwick (Scottish Cup Final L1)
Broke down en route.
No facility granted. Merv Janke was also missing having accepted a booking at Halifax instead. Team re-jigged with Colin Caffrey riding at #1.
07/09/1981 at Newcastle (NL)
Domestic circumstances - wife Kath was ill.
Charlie McKinna was also missing injured. No facility appears to have been granted for Steve, R/R cancelled out between Tom Owen and Charlie, and Colin Caffrey rode at #1.
20/07/1987 at Exeter (NL)
Stomach bug.
R/R cancelled out (with either Bruce Cribb or David Smart). Roland Tebbs rode at #1. Steve would also have missed the matches at Rye House (19th) and Poole (21st) had they not been rained off.
03/09/1989 at Eastbourne (NL), 04/09/1989 at Exeter (NL) and 05/09/1989 at Poole (NL)
Back injury sustained in a fall against Mildenhall at Shawfield on the 1st.
R/R used at Eastbourne and Poole. At Exeter it cancelled out with Frank Andersen so Martin McKinna rode at #1 and Tigers borrowed local junior Greg Daniels to make up the team.
19/05/1990 at Berwick (NL4TTQR)
Stomach upset.
Steve was only programmed at reserve for this match and Jason Lyons took his place.
06/08/1992 at Sheffield (HL2)
Recurrence of groin injury.
R/R used.
