The papers are full of photos of Jim Baxter doing keepy uppy as Scotland beat England 3-2 at Wembley fifty years ago today. I remember that day more for Tigers winning 40-38 at Old Meadowbank in our last BL meeting there. Maury Mattingley was outstanding as we ran up a large lead that was whittled away by tactical substitute rides leaving a last heat decider of George Hunter and Bernt Persson out against Alf Wells and Nils Ringstrom. An Edinburgh 5-1 looked likely, giving them an ill deserved draw but Ringstrom gated well, and although passed by Hunter on the first lap, rode a controlled race to get the vital second place. He might not have done much after that night but he is fondly remembered just for that night. While the defeat didn't definitively cost Edinburgh the BL title, it certainly went a long way to it in the final analysis. I think they ended four points off top place. Hoskins called it the "u kindest cut of all" These were the days.
