50 years ago on April 1st 1967, Bill Landels, a rank outsider if ever there was one, took the restaged 1966 Scottish Open with a maximum 15 points. The biggest ever shock in Scottish Speedway? - perhaps. Jack Young winning the World Title while with Edinburgh is another worthy of consideration. The Open title was a bit of an albatross around his neck and Landels was particularly poor in our win there two weeks later. Monk, as laconic as ever, pointed out to Mauger that at least Landels had gated him while he had taken the Kiwi from the back. Mauger scored reply is not known.

Bill was a big, brave lad on a night where do-or-die paid off for him - its good to have the underdog come out on top now and again. Bill's name would not often come up in speedway conversations if it had not been for his unexpected win. I think that his other claim to fame was that he used a Matchless engine for a while - it was a less-match when compared with JAPs ans ESOs of the era.
