Commencing 1987 but before I get to results I need to know what the team was called and when! I was led to believe Tigers final match as Glasgow was the 31st July rain off at Derwent Park against Stoke, and their first as Workington was the 7th August dust-off against Peterborough. A fellow researcher reckons that the away match at Newcastle on 27th July was the final Glasgow meeting, and the Stoke rain off the first as Workington. Anyone care to confirm the timeline here? I'd very much like the heat details of the dustathon if anyone can oblige. While I'm at it, what was the fate of the provisionally scheduled 6th September P'boro restaging? Slated for a 5.30pm start, what hideous disaster befell the promotion that weekend? Perhaps they were still trying to scrape off the sheuch from the Middlesbrough match

Those who recall that year may also remember that 2 seperate buses left for Workington on a Friday. The early bus went from Blantyre at 4, and the later bus left George Square at 5 (the one I usually had to get). Being on holiday from work, I finally got the chance to go on the early bus for the Eastbourne match on 10th July and arrived at a rather rainswept Beaton's yard in eager anticipation of actually seeing, or having a better than 10% chance of seeing, a full meeting.
Now it's foggy memory bank time, but I'm sure Martin McKinna was there ready to travel down with his bike, and our erstwhile promoter Dave Thomson was also present. Perhaps you were there too? Anyway after a bit of hanging around a phonecall was made to/came from Workington and the match was off. This was around half three, quarter to four. Thoroughly scunnered by this and the hassle of hoofing it to Cumbria every Friday I gave up on the season there and then and elected to embrace local weekend pass times like drinking heavily and fighting.
I recently snagged one of my missing programmes on Ebay and lo and behold it was the Eastbourne match with a Long Eaton insert. In his editorial Dave Thomson writes:
"Our last scheduled match against Eastbourne a fortnight ago fell foul of the weather with torrential rain appearing around half past six. The track was already pretty sodden from the previous day but the meeting would have gone ahead. The rain subsided briefly at 7 o'clock but while a track inspection was taking place the heavens opened up again and the cancellation was inevitable."
So either the bus was cancelled before the match was or the DLT jottings are complete and utter tripe.
Eastbourne were so appalled by what they found upon arriving at Derwent Park that day (in bright sunshine it should be said) that they filmed the worst of it and sent it to the SCB, an action which was instrumental in getting Tigers closed down. I can see that being covered up but I don't understand the purpose of making up a story about how and when the match was cancelled. Utterly bizarre.

When Tigers went on their southern tour of Rye House, Exeter and Poole without Steve Lawson, who captained the side in his absence? Rye House & Poole were rained off, the team at Exeter was Roland Tebbs, Jackson Irving, Gordon Whitaker, Derek Cooper, Martin McKinna, Jim Graham and Geoff Powell. Also SL related, first away match of the season at Berwick, Steve has an exclusion recorded in heat one. No mention of the reason in Speedway Star results, can anyone expand on this?

Dredging this thread back up again because you never know who might be looking in. I've been working on the wonderful 1987 season and am looking for anyone who has meeting-marked copies of the following programmes:
20th July at Exeter
24th July v Long Eaton
7th August v Peterborough
31st August v Middlesbrough
Marked second half details are a bonus but the major queries all centre around the main meetings.

1987 - Middlesbrough.pdf (692.17 KB) 1987 - Long Eaton.pdf (716.41 KB) Here are scans of the Long Eaton and Middlesbrough meeting results. Don't seem to be able to find the Peterborough programme, was that the one that was "dusted off"?
