I'm toiling to remember how our 1995 season ended. It was our last in the combined First Division and we were a creditable eighth or so and were probably unbeaten at home. However off track things weren't good and ultimately ended in liquidation. By mid season there were rumours of trouble and we started using some unusual and presumably cheaper whin dust for the track. Not great at all. There were tales of a possible relocation to Berwick where the weekly rental was far less, but that never came to anything. We had a much vaunted City of Glasgow trophy the night after the GP at Hackney, the one where Boycie thumped Gollob. I believe that the winner Ronnie Correy had to take/threaten legal action to get his first prize -was it really £5k? - and that may have played a large part in us going down the proverbial tubes. What was our last meeting? A decent one or a mix and match best pairs or what, and did the program say anything about our plight or did it mention plans for the following year? Less than twenty years ago but can't remember too much, indeed anything, about our last night in the big time. Ho p e some of you guys can help.

I think it was no surprise when we closed as we were having problems mid season. The Berwick one was interesting because the fans got wind of what Hopes was upto or he announced it , can't quite remember and it was just before the Fair. We were due to race Peterborough at Shawfield on the Sunday when it got called off on the Friday!!! There had been flooding in Glasgow that day ( raining on fair Friday?!) but to call it off two days before was unusual and the general feeling was that he didn't fancy the backlash he was going to get from the fans over the Berwick move. Got quietly dropped after that!!! As for the Correy cheque , there was speculation at the time he would struggle to get the money!!! Tich actually did the track from mid season and it improved no end as prior to that it had been poor, Hopes son I think was doing it.

That City of Glasgow trophy meeting ended my season and although I didn't know it at the time, it was also to signal the end of my regular speedway watching activities. I don't recall much of the season at all, even when looking through the results. I remember getting rained off at Cradley Heath and ending up at Bradford which was then abandoned about heat 8 or something. Because it had been a bit of a farce they decided to honour rain-off tickets, Bradford obviously became aware of our situation and announced the tickets would be honoured at Shawfield. Upon arrival at Shawfield the next night, the turnstyle lassie said she knew nothing about the arrangement and I fired off an uncomplimentary line about 'typical useless speedway promoters'. Turned out she was Dougie's daughter and she wasn't best pleased. Must have been a rivetting year - anyway here's the results for 1995: Glasgow 1995.pdf (17.38 KB)
