I've been working on a project to document the SJL for a while now. It's slowly but surely coming together, and if anyone is interested, you can view the current state of play via this link www.dropbox.com/sh/rcjv5uzg5ka7qs2/9-_H4E23q- You need to be able to view Excel 2003 files or newer for the result sheets, and bear in mind it's a work in progress so it looks like a dogs' breakfast in places, but you'll get the just. There's a couple of pics and other wee bits n bobs as well. MJFC has provided invaluable information but has exhausted his supply of marked up progs, so anyone who can assist with heat details, particularly for the 77-81 seasons, please get in touch. I've had a few riders getting in touch, amongst them was Willie Mirtle who sent me a couple of pics including this one attached - no cheating and peeking into yearbooks and progs, see how many of this bunch you can name?

Great photo, Dave, don't think I have seen that one before, is it..... I reckon it's 1980 and Dick Barrie, NOT SURE, Will Mirtle, Ronnie Craig, Paul Henderson (?), Alistair Craig, Paul McHale (on bike) and Guy Wilson kneeling, I used to love watching wee Guy's spectacular leg trailing style Think I told you the story of standing beside Paul McHales's family at the bookies stalls up the back of the wee stand for the SJL v AJL meeting at Blantyre.....never hear as much racket at a speedway meeting before or since

1980 is correct. Impressive attempt at the picture - not quite there though. No more clues in case anyone else fancies a go. Here's another pic, featuring Willie leading Paul McHale, very possibly in the meeting you talk about, MJFC. It's from 1981, bet your programme has stoor in the creases

That looks right, Dave, 1981 was Young Scotland against Young England at Blantyre and Paul was in England colours, so maybe a wee bit more tribalism was involved ....although I do remember him riding for the SJL the previous year, so I can't be certain which meeting it was Got a bit cocky with that line-up, I thought I had nailed them all, bar the guy standing beside Dick Barrie, can't quite put a name to his face ........and I cannae be ersed digging out progs or yearbooks to clarify things

Could the guy in the middle be Kenny Jarvie? I reckoned I knew Will (wasn't that his racing name?) and Alistair Craig but was stumped by the rest, although the tassles on Guy Wilson's leathers should have been a dead giveaway.

Ach let's reveal all : Standing l to r: Dick Barrie, Paul McHale, Willie Mirtle, Ronnie Craig, Paul Henderson and Alister Craig. Guy Wilson is kneeling and the chap on the bike is Barry Simpson. Taken at Swindon prior to (well I assume prior, they're awfy clean) the AJL v SJL match, 4/10/1980. The big question is: what have the 2 Newcastle/Felton boys spotted that the rest haven't?
