1969 was staged at Cliftonhill on Saturday 11th October in the second half of the Monarchs v Cradley Heath British League match. Ht. 1: Brian Murray, Jim Clark, James Allan, George Beaton 72.6 Ht. 2: Jim Gallacher, Kenny Omand, John Yates, Charlie Paterson 74.0 Final: Kenny Omand, Jim Clark, Jim Gallacher (f/exc), Brian Murray (f) 73.8 Taken from www.speedwayresearcher.org.uk/docs/coatbridge/1969.pdfI've no record of a full-scale meeting at Hampden in 72 so I'm guessing Allan Mackie won a second-half event. No more details unfortunately, one for Coombes perhaps?

I may be wrong but I have a recollection of reading an article way back in the Old Meadowbank days about a second half rider who did not have any transport (or money) who stripped down his old JAP and transported it via Corporation bus, then built it up in the pits before meetings - I have a feeling that was Kenny Omand.I always meant to check that with him. I know that he gave up speedway after an arm injury and joined the skateboard set back in the early seventies. Does anyone else remember the story?

Will need to check but think the 72 SJC was staged on the night Svein Kaasa was killed.29th Sept 72. Kenny Omand was the junior who took his bike to Old Meadowbank in a sidecar, prior to that I believe he made a couple of trips by bus!He rode for most of the 1970 season for Berwick but was replaced by Australian Bobby Campbell, and indeed a young Jimmy Beat on, the following year.

There were two heats and a final, won by Alan Mackie from Andy Meldrum and Wattie Robertson. Kenny Omand, mentioned above was the other finalist. The event was staged on 29/9/72. Incidentally the 1969 SJC was staged on Monarchs last ever meeting at Coatbridge, and presumably was the second last race of the night.

Can try and find the two qualifying race results for the 1972 event, which may have been sponsored by Neil and Sandra MacFarlane

Coombes, thanks for that confirmation. Kenny was quite a character. I used to live next door to his mum in South Queensferry in the seventies. Kenny had moved away to Livingston but used to visit occasionally in his old jalopy (no reverse gear so it was all hands on pushing duty for his 3 point turn - we lived in a cui-de-sac). He had switched allegiance from speedway to skateboarding and was the main man in the creation of the Livingston Skate Park which, apparently, is still going strong. Interestingly, Kenny is also going strong at 70 years of age skateboardscotland.com/news/evening-news-article-about-the-middle-age-shred/ and sidewalk.mpora.com/interviews/livingston_carved_in_stone_unedited.html . I have not seen him for over 30 years but it is good to know that he is still doing well

The 1972 qualifying heats were Heat 1 Mackie, Omand, Wilson, McLean 78.2 Heat 2 Meldrum, Robertson, Beresford, G Beaton fell 77.4
Dresser, how long did you stay in SQ? We were there 87-92. Could have travelled through together!

I am now back in the sunny West of Scotland.

Puma, the first three were right but the fourth was George Beaton, who, tragically was killed in a car accident just two weeks after riding in the SJC. Will try and find a time for the final.
