Can remember a couple of epic Inter league meetings with Halifax - at Coatbridge - and Hull and Cradley at Blantyre 1. Anyone got any details of the scorers or of later ones at Shawfield against Cradley, which we won, and I think Ipswich in the next round, which presumably we lost. Don't think we had any more inter league cup meetings although we had quite a few challenges of different sorts.

I had more of this information than I first thought. The 4TT results were taken from Speedway Researcher. I don't have the programme so don't know whether they used the old NL 4TT formula where riders swap around helmet colours throughout the meeting or the World Cup style where teams keep the same colour throughout the meeting. I've plumped for the former.

The Cradley match I posted last night but with 2nd half details included: 06 06 1980 Glasgow v Cradley Heath (Inter-L....pdf (224.24 KB) There were also two rained off challenges with Halifax at Blantyre Stadium, 15/09/1978 and 04/10/1981. Neither match was restaged.

There were no Inter-League matches during the Craighead Park era. The closest we came were two junior challenges and Jim Beaton's Testimonial. So I think Shawn Moran (Sheffield) and Kenny McKinna (Belle Vue) were the only BL riders ever to race at Craighead.

Thanks Dave. Didn't realise there have been quite so many over the years! Remember the Belle Vue visit to Blantyre1 vividly. Uno Johannson just about put Benny rourke into Hamilton Main Street when he rammed him on the third bend!!

Anyone know how Halifax who beat us in 1977 got on in the next round, and indeed who won the trophy. Simi l early for Swindon who murdered Edinburgh over two legs in 1981. Did they go on to win the trophy?

The Dukes withdrew from the competition because they couldn't find a convenient date for their 2nd round home tie with Ipswich. Witches went on to win the trophy defeating Cradley 81-75 in the two-legged final (49-29 & 32-46).
The 1981 competition was for the Speedway Star KOC. The Inter-League Cup was binned during the winter and the top 8 NL sides from 1980 entered the competition in the preliminary round. Having beaten Sheffield 49-47, Monarchs went down 74-118 (27-69 at Swindon & 47-49 at Powderhall) in the first round proper. Robins saw off Leicester in the Quarter Finals before losing out to eventual competition winners Ipswich in the semi's.

It's a pity we didn't go out to the winners! Have a Division Two side ever won more than one tie? I think Workington had a good result - in 1976? - when they beat Ipswich but don't think they got past the next round, might have been Kings Lynn. Newcastle too might have managed to make a fist of it in the mid 70s. Anyone remember that far back?

It was NL 0 BL 10 in the first round of the 1977 competition. Tigers 2 point defeat was bettered only by Rye House who lost by 1 against Hackney. 1978 saw an 8-0 whitewash. Mildenhall came within a whisker of defeating White City but Ray Bales fell while on a match winning 5-1 with Rob Henry and the Rebels sneaked home 39-38. The same 8-0 wipeout occurred in 1979. Tigers were bulldozed 20-58 by Hull at Blantyre. Best result was Rye House losing by 4 against Exeter. 1980. Well you could probably guess by now. Another 8-0 to the BL chaps. Oxford forced a replay with Leicester with a 39-39 draw at Cowley but were well beaten at Blackbird Road. Newcastle ran Hackney close, going down 38-40 in a rain-affected meeting that saw Finn Thomsen and Barry Thomas walk out, leaving the Hawks with just one rider in 3 heats. The competition was scrapped for 1981 and I think it was 91/92 before it resurfaced as the BSPA cup but not 100% on that one. I have limited info for 75 or 76 but from the yearbooks it appears that having defeated Ipswich, Workington then beat King's Lynn in the next round. In the semi-final AT Hull, Comets were unsurprisingly defeated 54-23. Interesting scorecard, see link below. 19760929HullvWorkILKOCSF.pdf (162.38 KB)

Thanks Dave, all good stuff. I take it Workington had narrow victories over Ipswich and Kings Lynn - do you know the scores or details. John Berry in his "Confessions" book reckoned that at least one of his riders had been bought off but didn't say any more.

In the Hull v Workington meeting the Comets seem to have used Rider Replacement for BOTH Steve Lawson land Taffy Owen!! Was this ever in the rules or did Ian Thomas just make this up "on the hoof"?
