Anybody remember the fiasco that was Motherwell in 1972?
Yes the Long Track events were ok - not great but just OK.
However the speedway was a complete shambles. The speedway track was inside the stock car track, which was inside the supposed Moto Cross track, which was inside the Trotting track. So the terracing was a long distance from the track, but worse stll the fence was 8x4 marine ply - which hid most of the track!! After heat one, everyone scrambled over the tracks to stand on the stock car track to watch heat two - and promptly got filled in!! Absolutely terrible! The meeting was held in June against Teesside and was the only one ever staged - no surprise after the fiasco - butspeedway must have cost the promotion - KK Raceways, or something like that- a fortune. An earlier meeting against Barrow wasn't staged although programs were issued. Was it just rained off, or were there problems in getting the track licenced?
Not everything from the past was glorious!! and this certainly wasn't!!

I seem to recall that the late 'Crazy Jack' Millen was mega quicker around Milton St. than anyone else.

I was at the Tees-side match and I do remember that it was raining, so much so that one cup of bovril seemed to last the whole match. ;D I do recall that Ashington had a very short season in the early 70s after Newcastle closed, and it may also have been a one match season.

Bernie, remember anything about the Motherwell V Barrow meeting, scheduled for a month earlier but never staged - rained off or did the track not gain a licence in time ? As well as Ashington, I think Cyril Crane ran an unlicenced meeting near Norwich which upset offiialdom more than somewhat - to the extent that he never got it licenced for the following year!
