After watching the Swindon v Eastbourne match on the telly last night, I feel it is time to give praise to our Robert Dickson on how he deals with the riders at the starting gate. There were two officials at the meeting last night taking turns at starting and both were equally lax at bringing the riders forward within a reasonable time which created unnecessary frustrating delays. Robert appears to be one of the few who calls the riders forward in the correct order (as per the rules) and he is relentless when a rider is not conforming. Well done Robert. Keep up the good work.

Got to agree with you about Robert, but also say that Sunday's start marshal was Hugh McNeilly, and the same applies.

I agree with your comments completely, but I'm a bit biased ;D I do get really frustrated watching some of the televised meetings, especially with the distance some of the riders are from the tapes and get away with it! So I'll say thank you on behalf of him, and make sure that your comments are passed on Robert also does a lot of work outwith the season, as do a whole host of other people, so a big pat on the back to everyone! Cheers tigerstripes

I love start marshals and referees to pieces. All of them. They do a fine job keeping naughty riders in check. But there’s always room for improvement.
I don’t have a problem with riders boot-tapping the dirt or poking a groove with the front tyre at the starting gate. It helps build tension towards tapes-up, allows riders to get in “the zone” and gives Michael Max the chance to wind up the crowd. What I do find unacceptable is riders jumping out of the saddle to do some light gardening. A gap in the regs seems to allow this practice, but starting marshals and refs shouldn’t condone it. A rider whose bahookie isn’t in contact with the softest part of the bike should be penalised for delaying the start.
C’mon, guys. This is speedway, not Riverdance.

Robert and Hugh both do a very good job and with the minimum of fuss - never seeking to become the focus of attention - unlike some at other tracks who try to 'build their part'. Well done lads.
Who else has performed this role over the years?
I can recall the legendary Billy Wilson, Neil Muldoon (so badly treated during that Sheffield meeting a number of years back), Allan McCall and Allan Robertson. I'm sure there must have been others that have slipped my mind?

I've done my bit as assistant Starting Marshal with Billy Wilson(my first meeting as assistant start marshall was Geoff Powell's testimonial meeting in 1990 complete with stookie) and Neil Muldoon. Only job I haven't done is Machine Examiner.

Neil Muldoon (so badly treated during that Sheffield meeting a number of years back) Agreed, CT. Neil was very shabbily treated indeed. Am I right in remembering that Adam Allott was the root cause of that nonsense?

What happened to Neil that night?? He used to take my football teams training and he was a proper workhorse. We didn't like it when he showed up

from what i can remember the rider came back around after the race to complain to neil about somthing to do with the start of the race the only thing that neil done was place his hand od said rider as they were talking there was never any malice or anything like that only neil trying to calm down the rider but then the rider complained to the ref and neil got fined and removed from the starting gate totally out off order as he had done nothing wrong just a stupid kid venting at neil because he lost the race dont think neil ever done the starts again after that shame as the ref should have acted properly and not done anything as it was just a stupid kid trying to be the big man , its a crap way to end a long time service to the tigers

I was told that the Sheffield incident was prior to me returning in late 2001 and I'm pretty sure that I saw Neil at the tapes in 2002 at least
