I only buy the occasional Speedway Star, but this week’s purchase is different. It’s smaller than the usual A4, being 200mm by 283mm. In all other respects, it carries the same content. The mag's barcode is smudged, so the checkout woman at my local Tesco had to punch in its number.
Have I been furnished with a bootleg version of the Star or has it been smaller for some time?

A few cost saving measures of late. Thinner less shiny paper, earlier deadline to reduce postal charges suggest the Star is facing a tough time, losing subscribers and getting beaten to the punch by internet postings. A pity, it's been a weekly staple for me for close to 60 years.

A pity, it's been a weekly staple for me for close to 60 years. Fond memories of the old black-and-white days (with the famous red banner). A neighbour of my great aunt gave me his issues for free, although I tended to be a week behind the news curve. Happy days being knocked out by the colourful race jackets of visiting teams at Hampden.
