It never occurred to me at the time, but my weekly trip to Craighead Park (1982-86) was a bit of a sprachle by train.
Getting to Blantyre 2 was a piece of cake. I worked at Charing Cross in Glasgow, so I only had a short walk to Anderston (under the Kingston Bridge) to pick up the train to Blantyre. That came after gorging on a plate of pakora in the basement bar of the Ramana restaurant in Sauchiehall Street.
The way home was more interesting: Blantyre to Newton, Newton to Mount Florida and Mount Florida to Muirend. As I wasn’t driving at the time, I made full use of a Transcard, which stretched to Newton on my card’s zone. The train from Blantyre arrived at Newton just before the connection to Mount Florida, so my only apprehension was being abandoned at Newton. The station was spookily remote at night.
Today, a trip to Ashfield is almost as tortuous - by bus. From the Borders to Possilpark involves three buses, so it’s still a bit of an adventure, an enjoyable one. The bonus is bus travel is free for this old-timer.

As a lifelong Birmingham supporter, I always use public transport to get to Perry Barr - mainly because my son works in Tyseley on the South side of Birmingham (Perry Barr is as far to the Northern edge of Birmingham as it is possible to get), and we can then come home together in his car.
To get to the stadium, I catch a bus from Brierley Hill to Stourbridge, and then a train to Birmingham Snow Hill, and then another bus from the City Centre to Perry Barr. It can be a bind of a journey sometimes, especially when the City Centre to Perry Barr bus route is congested as it often is, but it still beats driving over via the M5 and M6 motorways, which is frequently an absolute nightmare of a trip.

As far as the other Birmingham tracks were concerned, when we were at Bordesley Green, I worked in Great Barr (the next district to Perry Barr) and had to get a bus to the City Centre, then another bus to Bordesley Green (a pretty awful and very rundown district) and then take my life in my hands by walking the last half mile or so, dodging the beggars and the toughs!
In fact, the easiest journey for me would have been the pre-war venue of Hall Green which is the most distant from where I live! I could have got on the train at Cradley Heath and alighted almost outside the stadium at Hall Green Station after a less than 20 minutes ride!!
