David Tyler a promising starlet with Long Eaton who retired after breaking his ankle in a track crash seems to be pinning the reason for him quitting on the Glasgow track saying " I walked round the track and there was a piece of metal sticking through the fence and the lighting was dim. As far as I can see he rode twice at Craighead, once on a Sunday afternoon in October 1983 and the other on a sunny night in July the following year so find it hard to agree with his problem with the light. While there may have been something sticking tbrough the fence by late season I'm sure Jimmy Beaton would have fixed it quickly if he had pointed it out. Anyone remember these meetings and those times, dare I say it - to throw some light on his comments!

In 1984, I seem to remember it was a nice evening and a controversial match with decisions not going our way. It was the night Steve became the all time top scorer. I noticed Tyler withdrew from the second half possibly due to a fall in heat 11.

My recollection of the 1983 meeting was it was a cold, rainy afternoon. Long Eaton were dire and Tigers would have hit 70 but for giving junior Kenny Brailsford a couple of outings from #8.
He was in the thick of it in 1984. Tam Baggley barged under him coming off the fourth bend and Tyler went down. The race continued and Tyler ran in last but referee Will Freeland excluded Baggley for unfair riding and awarded the third place point to Tyler. All hell broke loose resulting in Jimmy Beaton Snr. taking to the mic to announce that Freeland would never again officiate at Glasgow. Weather - dry but a bit overcast.
So it would appear he never rode under the lights, certainly not in full darkness.
I find his comments pretty ironic considering Station Road always looked to me like it had been napalmed.
