Watched the Eastbourne Peterborough match last night and couldnt help but notice that the crowd was dire. There looked to me to be around a couple of hundred at the ground and it looked the same during the last broadcast I watched which was from Peterborough. I take it that TV money is now running EL speedway because I can't see how crowd revenue is. Mind you it must be an exciting league trying to figure out which Polish rider your team will sign next ! Roll on August 9th at least there will be a decent crowd to watch our match.

The Elite League is no longer anywhere near the best league in the world. I wonder if SKY might eventually switch their attentions to Poland or Sweden for showing League speedway.

I was sayin last week I thot it was a pretty poor crowd and last nite was the same maybe ppl are savin money by just watchin it at home but personally I don't think I could do that, as much as I like 2 watch speedway on tv I just don't think it does the sport justice! The noise, the smell, the banter to name a few, lacks on tv!
Ah well roll on 9th august, I reckon we'll show them how it should be and not just trackside :-). :-)

Think it might be something to do wi th another thread on the forum, where Coombes started the ball rolling by talking about the damage the Grand Prix series is doing-Peterboro used to run on Friday nights, and I think like he suggests clubs running in midweeks are suffering badly with punters no' goin' if they've work the next day. Suspect too there will be supporters from there going to Cardiff on Saturday and seeing as you need a mortgage for the latter, folk can't afford to go to the two in the same week.

Never thought I'd hear myself say that the EL is getting a bit samey, unfortunately it is, more PL coverage would freshen things up. I still think it's better than no coverage at all though. The thought of weekly polish league coverage is mouthwatering!

Crowd was really poor and it looked like they had been organised along the home straight to make it appear at first glance that there were more than there really were! Anyone else think so?
Don't know who picks the televised meetings, or who has the "pull" to get their team on but Coventry seem to be on a whole lot more than most; and I don't think Ipswich have had ahome meeting shown this year so far - would be good to see their new wider track.
Could the PL do a deal with another channel - ESPN, ITV3or 4 or any other - to show our meetings or have the BSPA entered us into an exclusive deal with Sky

I realise it isnt great at the moment, but I dread to think what sort of state British speedway would be in right now, if it werent for the tie up between the BSPA and SKY

I'm sure most of us can remember when speedway rarely featured on TV and even then it was recorded highlights on a Saturday afternoon of a big individual meeting ... and the result was known too. Back then, it was a case of the Speedway Star and/or Speedway Mail (remember it?!) and/or the match programme encouraging fans to write to the TV companies requesting more speedway coverage. Then came satellite TV and Eurosport covered a few meetings. I'd much rather be in the current position of choosing whether or not to watch ... than have no coverage at all!

Agree totally with comments about coverage. It is great to have speedway on the box every week and we should never take it for granted. My worry is are we are watching a league running to empty stadiums that is fully supported, subsidised and only kept running by TV money ? If that is the case what happens if the TV company gets fed up with speedway or realises that speedway is totally reliant on them and decides to cut either the coverage or the cash ?

does anyone remember the meeting that was shown on stv in the 90's ? I think if my memory is correct it was a cup meeting against endinburgh.I think it was the same meeting that Robert Nagy pulled up at the line and got overtaken :-(

STV occasionally covered matches in the 70's at least, usually with Don Cumming on the microphone. Can remember riding shotgun with hiim at Hampden and later at Paisley in the 70's giving him a few facts and figures about the participants-paid pretty well too, from what I can remember! PS In an effort to keep entirely on thread, I think there would have been about 6,000 at Hampden and just short of 15,000 at Paisley. In terms of the subject on this thread, how many promoters would kill to have that amount of paying punters these days?

I think if my memory is correct it was a cup meeting against endinburgh.I think it was the same meeting that Robert Nagy pulled up at the line and got overtaken :-( Was it not the 2nd leg of the 1992 Spring Trophy, barrheadred? I think the Tigers needed a 5-1 from the last heat to force a draw on aggregate and Bowes and Nagy had it sewn up until Nagy seemed to slow just as the line was approaching, allowing Les Collins to nip through, looked very suspect to me at the time STV also showed the Inter-Nations meeting the year before. Remember the one that was cancelled in the summer and re-run in October and Lyonsy had a couple of great races for Australia against Sweden and England. The coverage on Saturday afternoons World Of Sport in the 70s and 80s was always pretty good and made all the better thanks to Dave "high wide and handsome" Lannings dulclet west country tones, much more easier on the lugholes than screamer Pearson The test matches between England and the USA and the tough British Final were always my favourites. Alhthough can anyone recall a 1986 Test match between England and Denmark from Cradley Heaths Dudley Wood stadium which was shown one Saturday afternoon, nothing unusual in that, except for the fact that it was commentated on by none other that DICK Barrie himself and I am glad to say that he was god awful at it ;D
