All being well, we may see Jason Crump in action at Ashfield this year.
I wondered how many other World Champions had appeared at our tracks over the years?
Here's my best guess off the top of my head, though I'm sure it won't be correct or complete.
White City: Jack Young, Barry Briggs, Ivan Mauger
Hampden: Barry Briggs, Ivan Mauger, Ronnie Moore, Ove Fundin, Ole Olsen
Coatbridge: Ivan Mauger, Egon Muller, Peter Collins, Michael Lee
Blantyre I: Ivan Mauger, Peter Collins, Bruce Penhall, Erik Gundersen
Blantyre II: Gary Havelock
Shawfield: Hans Nielsen, Gary Havelock, Per Jonsson, Billy Hamill, Greg Hancock, Tony Rickardsson, Jason Crump, Nicki Pedersen, Mark Loram
Ashfield: Gary Havelock, Chris Holder, Tai Woffinden, Mark Loram

Peter Craven rode for England against Scotland at The White City in 1956 and Ove Fundin was really disappointing in a Northern Riders Championdship Round in 1967, trailling in behind Nils Ringstrom and Brian Whaley. However he won the world title a few weeks later. He was decidedly more impressive at Coatbridge riding for Sweden when they murdered GB. Anders Michanek rode at White City, Hampden and Coatbridge at various times. Jason Doyle has been at Ashfield and Freddie Williams may have ridden at Paisley Road West but would need to check that. Ditto Michael Lee and Coatbridge.

Afaik, Freddie Williams appeared at Ashfield in 1950 , a Welshman top-scoring for Engerlund v Scotland. Havent traced Tommy Price as appearing .Also thought I had seen Jan O. Pedersen up here but I think I must be haverin'.

Bembulben Tommy Price rode for Newcastle at The White City in 1945 in a bounce challenge meeting. Couldnt find Williams at WC either.

Good man, ie you not Price. Here is another. Hampden 1969 , I think, JERZY SZCZAKIEL scored 9 for Poland vs GB

Thanks everyone. Kicking myself for missing Jason Doyle! I'm sure Michael Lee rode at Cliftonhill for Boston.
Jerzy Szcazkiel was the one I'd have assumed definitely hadn't made it to Glasgow, surprised to hear that he did ride at Hampden.

Thanks, coombes. I see Tommy Price then rode FOR Glasgow in the return at Newcastle. He also appeared again at the White City in September 1945 in a Best Pairs competition. When will we see Zmarzlik at Ashfield ?

This looks like a picture of Shane Bowes and Jan O Pedersen presumably at Shawfield on a Tigers FB page but dont remember Jan O riding that night. Would that count if he was there but didnt ride?

Would that count if he was there but didnt ride? I can remember a few other visits from non-riding champions. Barry Briggs and Greg Hancock have both been to Ashfield and Erik Gundersen was at Shawfield in 1988. I'm fairly sure that Ivan Mauger was at Craighead Park when Kym was in our team? One more for the Shawfield list is Sam Ermolenko who rode in a challenge for Wolves. Peter Collins also rode at Ashfield in Les' silver jubilee meeting and was very impressive, despite having being retired for many years. Did Jason Crump ride at Ashfield in a closed door session with Mick Powell one year?

We've had Erik Riis and of course Dimitri Berge. Surely Kelvin "top drawer" Tatum must have ridden Ashfield in his Arena Essex days.

I seem to recall Mr Tatum having a bad tempered 'spat' at the end of a race at Ashfield (can't remember who annoyed him). Mr & Mrs Mauger were at Ashfield a few years ago to try to sell his latest book - none too successfully, as I recall. He looked a little lonely so I nipped over for a bit of small talk to make him feel welcome. Small talk it certainly was - I'm not sure if I got as many as two words.

It was 7 August 2002 and Kelvin scored 8 from 5 (30320). Rusty Harrison guested for us and passed him in his fourth race. I seem to remember the ignoranti in the crowd giving KT some shellacking when he didnt win. Not me as I can appreciate al riders bar dirty ones. Maybe he thought he could just swan up tae Glesga and show the Jocks what real stars could do.

I remember Mauger's visit in contrast to Briggo's. Both were selling their books at the time. Briggo's was for the disabled riders fund while Mauger's was just a commercial enterprise. Briggo was set up on the first bend terracing and was happy to have a blether about anything. In my case we talked about his brothers Wayne and Murray for quite some time before I asked about his book. Mauger had his stall in front of the stand and was business personified. Got my book signed in less than a minute even tjough there was no queue. No need to say whom I preferred.
