Technically Colin Caffrey was a member of the Berwick juniors (Borderers?) prior to him coming into the Tigers team

Charlie McKinna, Ken Hall, Geoff Powell and Jacko Irving. Phil Jeffrey and Sean Courtney also rode SJL but well before we signed them

Other riders who rode in the SJL for other clubs, fleeting or otherwise, and went on to don the Stripes, again fleeting or otherwise , include.......Bernie Collier, Keith Bloxsome and Carl Clarke, all for Belle Vue, Michael Irving and John Walmsley both with Workington and Martin Dixon for Teesside. I think the most successful product of those early SJLs was Wayne Brown, who would win the NLRC within three years. Although he did fail to outscore his team mate, and Herbies main man, during the 1977 SJL season with the Borderers. In fact no one outshone Caff as he was to be top man in the SJL that inaugural season ;D Wayne was a cracking wee rider, aswell as a cracking wee guy, as he let me sit on his bike at Blantyre one night as he chatted to my old man ;D I used to love the SJL when I was a lad

Didn't know that about CC, and don't think he did either-or he's forgotten! Of course, hardly a surprise that he finished top man that year as he'd had a terrific education the previous 2 years....... ;D

I remember the 1979 meeting in particular for two unbelievable races between Kenny McKinna and the spectacular Nigel Sparshott. worth every penny of the admission money my Dad paid

Apologies for bumping an old thread but I thought it would keep things tidier I'm seeking information about a SJL rider from 1979 called Roger Connerford. He appears in a team picture with Willie Mirtle and Kenny McKinna but I can't find any record of him racing a SJL fixture. The picture featured in a programme from 13th July, by which time the league had started. The Blantyre Eagles side was Kenny McKinna, Willie Mirtle and Bill Logan for all but one of their 12 matches, where Gus Bowman replaced Logan. Can anyone shed any light on Mr Connerford, or indeed identify any possible junior match he rode in? Many thanks in advance.

I assume you mean Roger Commerford. He was an Australian junior who made few appearances in this country. He didn't ride in the Scottish Junior League but rode one match for Cradley in the Anglia Junior League in 1979.
His biggest claim to fame was riding for the Tigers as an emergency stand-in when we raced our National League match at Weymouth on 1st May 1979. He took four races , had two third places, two falls for a score of 2+1. Arond this time the Tigers used to borrow a lot of southern based juniors to make up our team.
He then rode one match for Stoke at home to Glasgow on 25th August 1979 scoring zero from 2 rides. He also rode in a late season challenge match for Stoke at Ellesmere port scoring zero from 1 ride.
