Well now we definitely know what we need to do. Berwick beat Edinburgh 54-36 and finish with the necessary 14 points to ensure qualification for the semis. We need five points as previously outlined. Not completely sure about all the possible combinations of scores but feel we would beat Berwick's race point total and top the section should we get the required five points.

Well there certainly can't be any claims that using Luke Ruddick made us stronger! A good win which leaves us needing a draw or better at Armadale to go through to the semis, which will have Leicester, Eastbourne and Berwick three Saturday night tracks which won't make finding dates particularly easy.

With our fixture at Armadale now holding up the competition, hopefully the BSPA will ensure a date is agreed promptly. With neither team having a fixture on May 31, it seems the obvious date. However if it is staged after this date, it would be run under June Green Sheets, which I think will have a 40 point limit for team building. Hopefully this will have no bearing on the date that is selected.

Perhaps unusually my arithmetic was correct. If we get a draw at Armadale our racepoints are 289 - 251, marginally better than Berwick's 287 - 252.

In February Rob Godfrey said "if something happens with a Shield match, like a rain off, then you have to put a league match back and get it rearranged right away. For the Shield we have a cut off of six weeks from the beginning of the season and if clubs don't get their Shield fixtures done within that time there are going to be fines". The mutually blank date of May 31, while beyond the six week deadline, should be under consideration. Possibly it is unacceptable as it's the British semi final that night, probably involving Paul Starke and James Sarjeant. However that shouldn't mean spilling over into June, although that may well suit Edinburgh. Right now their Green Sheet total is just over 38, and with one home and one away prior to the cut off it is unlikely to change significantly. From June 1 could they redeclare their team using the 40 point limit which takes effect from that date? It would give them around 2 points to utilise, possibly not good news for William Lawson or even Justin Sedgmen. Glasgow with a figure around 40 have no similar leeway.

The increase to 40 points does not come into effect until July 1st green sheets.

I stand corrected Gazc, particularly as I can't now even find the reference to the 40 point limit on the BSPA page. Any idea where it is please?

Godfrey has been good to his word and we are now at Armadale on May 24th with our home fixture against his Scunthorpe side being deferred. This is certainly good for the competition but is it right that Friday tracks Glasgow and Scunthorpe now have an awkward fixture to rearrange - see PC49s separate thread. Shouldn't Edinburgh have been told to race it on an "off" night?

We get Eastbourne in the semis and, after our results against then. we must fancy our chances. Friday July 5 looks free for our home tie and Saturday July 13 is similarly unencumbered at Eastbourne, although both clubs might have other ideas for these dates.

Nearly a month on and we don't seem to be any further forward in getting dates for our Shield semi with Eastbourne. I'm pretty sure nothing was announced yesterday. Surely we need to either go for a midweek date or to rearrange some league meetings to create a space, the latter probably being the more difficult option. With Eastbourne beating Leicester 57 - 33 in the KO Cup yesterday, you've got to fancy them to progress to the semi where we would again meet them should we come through against Redcar this week. Really we need to get the Shield dates fixed up very soon.
